Supergirl

“Supergirl” is an OK movie that teeters on being slightly bad. It struggles to find a cohesive identity, marred by one-dimensional supporting characters, a comically boring villain, and the painful choice to have its climactic final battle play out with a slo-mo/speed-up style that felt fresh in 2006’s 300.

Arguably, “Supergirl” may have fared better as a limited TV series. The relationship between Milly Alcock’s Supergirl and Eve Ridley’s Ruthye Marye Knoll has fun potential; a contrast between a slight degenerate and her younger, wholesome sister.

Still, I can’t help but wonder why “Supergirl” was chosen to be the second film for DC’s cinematic universe reboot. It feels like a strategic mistake - given the immensity of the task and the precedent of having Superman go first, why not go for one of the other Justice League characters? The window to pull off the extended universe feels short, and I feel that “Supergirl” takes some of the wind out of the sails generated by “Superman.”

For me, this one is better to watch at home or on a plane. I give “Supergirl” a 2.5 out of 5.
